The Champions League Trophy

We’re getting extremely excited about the Champions League Final between Juventus and Barcelona on the 06/06/2015 in Berlin, Germany.

So with that in mind we’ve decided to fill you in with some much need knowledge on the Champions League Trophy!

Real Madrid's captain Casillas and team mates celebrate with the trophy after defeating Atletico Madrid in the their Champions League final soccer match at the Luz Stadium in Lisbon

Current holders Real Madrid are out and they leave behind the beautiful Champions League trophy, which stands 73.5cm tall and weighs 7.5kg, is the sixth overall and dates back to 2006.

A rule introduced in the 1968/69 season allowed the cup to become the property of any club which won the competition five times or three years in a row. That means Real Madrid CF, AFC Ajax, FC Bayern München, AC Milan and, since 2005, Liverpool FC all have an original in their trophy rooms. Under new regulations, any club which wins the trophy three consecutive times or five times in total receives a special mark of recognition, with the club then starting a new cycle from zero.

After Real Madrid were allowed to keep the original in 1967, UEFA’s General Secretary, Hans Bangerter, decided to create a new design and called in a local specialist in Berne, Jürg Stadelmann.

“My father Hans and I went along to Herr Bangerter’s office and covered the whole floor with the drawings,” recalled Stadelmann. “He made comments like, ‘The Bulgarians would like the bottom of that. The Spaniards would like that, but the Italians would prefer that and the Germans would go for this bit.’ We put the design together like a jigsaw puzzle. It was a design constituted of many parts yet I like it and I think everyone in football likes it as well.

“I remember that it had to be finished before 28 March,” Stadelmann added, “because I was getting married and taking my wife on a ten-day boat trip to Los Angeles. The trophy took 340 hours to make. I did the finer work, then it was finished off by the engraver, Fred Bänninger. On time, I am glad to say.”

“It may not be an artistic masterpiece,” said the maker of the trophy, “but everybody in football is keen to get their hands on it.”

EA SPORTS™ FIFA 16 will feature 12 Women’s National Teams for the first time in franchise history when it launches starting on September 22, 2015 in North America. Women’s National Teams from Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, England, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Sweden, and the United States of America will all represent their respective federations in several FIFA 16 game modes including Kick Off, an Offline Tournament, as well as Online Friendly Matches.

“Bringing some of the best women’s players and teams in the world to our franchise is a massive event for EA SPORTS, and we are equally excited  about bringing millions of fans a new way to play,” said David Rutter, VP and GM, EA SPORTS FIFA.

What does it mean to you to be in FIFA 16?
It is such an honor for women’s players and our team to be included in FIFA 16. I always wondered what it would be like to see our team in the game and it is very cool to know that it is now a reality.

Did you play video games growing up? What was your favorite game?
We definitely played video games growing up and my favorite was definitely Mario Party.

Who is your biggest inspiration?
My family has been a consistent source of support and inspiration throughout my career. I also grew up being inspired by US Women’s National Team “greats” like Kristine Lilly, Mia Hamm and my current teammate, Abby Wambach. Watching them inspire a generation of girls during the ’99 World Cup was incredible. In turn, we are inspired daily by the girls that support us and strive to be in our shoes one day. I was once that little girl and I know how important it was to me to have role models for me to emulate on and off the field.

What do you listen to before a game?
Mumford and Sons, James Bay and LumineersPre-game meal?
Banana pancakes, chicken and pasta.

How would your teammates describe you?
I am not exactly sure how they would describe me but I would hope that they would say that she is someone who is a professional that works hard on and off the field to strive to be better and help the team win. I also would hope that they see me as a player that wants to leave the game of soccer in a better place than where I found it just like the players that came before us.

What would winning the FIFA World Cup mean to you?
It would mean everything. I know how much it means to my teammates and it is the one thing that many of us have not accomplished on the field. Abby Wambach in particular has done so much for our National Team and the sport that it mean everything to me if we could help get her that World Cup that she has been chasing her entire career.

FIFA 16 with Women’s National Teams will be available on all major playing platforms.

A guide to the language of Sunday League football

‘Where’s the Talking?’

Going quiet is forbidden in amateur football, so this set of phrases has emerged to punctuate the painful periods of silence

Talking is easy. Not talking enough is generally agreed in Sunday League to be highly counter-productive. Players are urged before kick-off for “lots of talking”, especially “back there”.

Clichéd as they are, many strained bellows you hear on a football pitch – “Man on!”, “Out we go!”, etc – are useful instructions. The following set of on-pitch rallying cries, however, deserve closer inspection:

1) “We’ve Gone Quiet”

Going quiet, as highlighted earlier, is the sign of a malfunctioning team. No one is talking, which means they all might as well go home.

2) “Straight In”

Getting “straight in” is not a continuous requirement, but merely an opening gesture of intent, which is likely to be unfulfilled. It is often accompanied by a mindless, yet somehow entirely appropriate-feeling, clap of the hands.

3) “Two On The Edge”

When a corner is awarded, it is everyone’s job to pick up their man. One eagle-eyed player has the extra task of spotting a discrepancy in this complex marking system, in that there are two unattended opponents lumbering into the penalty area.

4) “All Day”

An utterly irritating phrase used by smug opponents to declare your attacking efforts as weak and unlikely to succeed, even if repeated.

5) “It’s Still 0-0”

If a Sunday League team races into an early lead, one stern-faced, armband-toting try-hard will attempt to construct a parallel universe in which the game is, in fact, goalless.

6) “Box ‘Em In!”

A cult classic, perhaps, which satisfies two fundamental criteria: 1) a laughable attempt at tactical insight, and 2) exclaimed almost instinctively, every single time. The ball goes out for an opposition throw-in, deep in their final third, and it is universally accepted that they do not have the adequate technical skills!

7) “[Shirt Colour] Head on This!”

Possibly the most pointless one of all. For the uninitiated, this cryptic command is for your teammates to meet an imminent opposition hoof with their head before the other lot can.

8) “Away!”

Loosely translated as “Now look here, team-mate, I neither want nor trust you to play your way out of trouble. Please dispose of the ball as quickly and as far away as possible.”

9) “Time!”

The ball drops from the air and a player finds himself in acres of space. Pointing this out to him might seem a good idea. It’ll calm him down, allow him to get his head up and play a pass, rather than treat the ball like an unpinned grenade.

10) “Who’s got tape?”

The gold-dust of amateur football, despite being available in any hardware shop. As the sole provider of ankle-securing tape, once you declare and dispense it, you will never see it again.

Why we all love Sunday League!

There are only two types of players

In the words of Pep Guardiola: “It’s chaos or control…”

For the first time, these two distinct types of player will have their own boots. The old adidas silos have been discontinued. No more F50, no more Predator, no more 11pro and no more Nitrocharge. There is only chaos and control. There is only X and ACE.

ACE15 Hero VisualEvery great team needs the players that keep it on track. That bring the coaches plans into action. They bring order to a chaotic game. Players like Mesut Özil, James Rodríguez, Oscar, Manuel Neuer and Ivan Rakitić are the glue of some of the world’s best teams. For these players, adidas has designed ACE15.

ACE15 is built to control. The revolutionary CONTROL WEB gives ultimate ball control, thanks to an engineered 3D material. A 3-layer compound combines with grippy EVA for an unbeatable touch. A ground breaking new stud configuration puts more studs on the ball during foot-over moves to allow for complete ball control. The unique NSG (Non-stop grip) skin uses 3D dots for perfect control in all conditions. The players that run the show now have the boots to dominate.

X15 Hero VisualSome players can never be controlled. They are the spark that ignites a game. They defy rules and structure. The moment of genius that gets the crowd off their seat – that’s their speciality. There is no defence and no tactic that can control them. These players are specialists in chaos. Thomas Müller, Gareth Bale, Luis Suárez, Karim Benzema and Álvaro Morata, these players strike without a moment’s notice. For them, adidas has created X15.

X15 is the ultimate weapon for the game’s most dangerous players. The TECHFIT COLLAR offers a compression fit around the ankle for superior support and fit. The X-CLAW base is built to give complete traction with a lightweight feel. The innovative X-CAGE is built for the most dynamic and agile players in the world. A fragmented and lightweight design gives ultimate support during the most agile movements. The X-SKIN is made up of a complex three layered system that delivers comfort, protection and performance in any conditions. A game changing product for game changing players.

The Worlds’ best will unleash both the ACE15 and X15 for the first time at the BIGGEST stage there is, the UEFA Champions League Final in Berlin on Saturday 6th June.

These revolutionary new weapons will be available to purchase from Wednesday 1st July at adidas own-retail outlets and specialist retailers worldwide!

adidas retires entire boot range

Adidas today have announced the end of existing on field boot silos – Predator, 11pro, Nitrocharge and F50!

Yes, you read correctly! Adidas are killing off the PREDATOR!

In an unexpected new video released today, players including Leo Messi, Thomas Müller, Luis Suarez and Oscar sparked a revolution and announced the end of adidas’ existing on field boot silos. No more Predator, f50, 11Pro and Nitrocharge.

adidas has always been the leading brand in football innovation and, working with top coaches such as Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho, they have identified that the game has changed and instead of previously defined player types or positions, modern football teams nowadays need only two types of player on the pitch.

Pep Guardiola said: “It’s chaos or control. You need both. They are part of the game. Part of the field. You need players who have to analyse what you have to do. And there are other ones who have to be a bit free and show his talent as much as possible. When you have a team you mix both types of ideas. You have a big advantage.”

Monday 25th May is the date when adidas’ revolutionary new products designed for the modern game are unveiled for the first time!

It’s now X or Ace…. Like the idea or hate it, you can’t deny that the Adidas future is certainly going to be entertaining!

More details to follow!
